When to Change Your Oil in Minnesota's Climate

3 min read

Minnesota's temperature swings (–20°F to 95°F) put unique stress on engine oil. Cold starts thicken oil and increase wear; summer heat thins it and reduces protection.

For most modern vehicles in Minnesota, we recommend full synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles, or 6 months — whichever comes first. Cars that mostly do short trips (under 20 minutes) should change at 3,500 miles since the oil never fully reaches operating temperature.

Use 0W-20 or 5W-30 for our climate unless your manual specifies otherwise. We can show you exactly what your manufacturer requires.
